Bunya Cones and Tamarind Flowers

I have picked the pods from this Asian Tamarind tree but I have not noticed it flower before.  The flowers are so beautiful and remind me of orchids.  The new foliage is lovely as well!

I'm glad I wasn't walking under the Bunya pine when this baby fell from the tree! It is about the size of a human head and heavy.  The nuts are edible and when the cone is dry I believe that one boils and then roasts the nuts before eating them.  I'll give it a go if the rats and possums don't get it first!

Since the flood I have noticed these black ants building their nests in trees, I'm not sure if it is just something I never noticed before or if they have changed their habits.  I am pretty sure that these ants usually lurk in the grass and bite (hard and painfully) unsuspecting bottoms sitting on the ground.

  1. Hello Remantics,

I haven't had much blog time lately, but I'm glad to hear that you've escaped the worst of the flooding and that you and your animals are OK. I hope things can return to relative normalcy soon. I'll be looking forward to reading about your walks.

    Kind regards,
    Gaye

  2. I've been wondering how you are doing as I hear about the floods. I looked on the map of Australia to see if I could find where you are, but I couldn't (though I did see Brisbane). Up until lately Australia was just a blob in the oceanto me. Then I read "Auto de Fay," a memoir by Fay Weldon, and began to see it differently. Then I got the comment from you. The place is starting to come alive for me....

Your photos continue to amaze me. I still haven't replaced my printer's ink cartridge, so I've not painted from them yet. What is the name of the fungus(?) in one of the pictures that looks like a thousand little bells?

I hope you are well and back home by now. We are having record snow, but it is basically just inconvenient.......not a disaster like your floods. Cheri
